Moments to Remember

Tuesday, 28 July 2009

The bedroom is still dark, thanks to our new blackout blind, when Alexander bursts in at 6.30am. "Far?" he asks, looking for Christian. "He's at work," I reply. Alexander climbs up into the bed with me and has a little cuddle, shuffling several times against my big tummy, trying to find a comfortable spot. We lie in comfortable stillness for about half a minute, then he climbs down from the bed again. My eyes are closed and I am desperately hoping for a few more minutes of sleep, until I hear Alexander's little voice saying, "Mummy poo". Time for a clean nappy. I roll out of bed and we head for the bathroom together to sort it out. In his delightful mix of English and Danish he tells me he doesn't want to sleep anymore. "Xander no sove (sleep)." I tell him that he doesn't have to. "Mummy sove?" he asks. I tell him I would like to rest some more. He runs to his bedroom and comes back with one of the books we borrowed from the library yesterday - My Great Big Book of Trucks. He climbs up into the bed with his big book and gets comfortable against the pillows while I sink wearily into the bed beside him. I close my eyes briefly, until Alexander starts to look through the book and tells me excitedly about each truck, touching my face each time to be sure that I am actually listening. We go through the whole book, and Alexander stops on each page to count the trucks in the same way..."two, three!". After looking through the whole book we are both wide awake. Alexander looks at me. "Pat?" he asks, referring to the Postman Pat DVD we also borrowed from the library yesterday. I tell him he can watch it. He looks at me with his big, blue eyes wide open and leans his head to one side. "Mummy go watch Pat?" he asks with a little smile and all the charm he can muster. Who could say no? And so we sit in the lounge room together watching Postman Pat. It's 7.30am and it's soon time to get some breakfast. But for right now, it's a really nice, cozy way to start the day, cuddling in the armchair together. These are the moments I want to remember.
