Weekend Baking - Doughnuts

Friday, 26 October 2012

We love doughnuts. We also happen to live in a country with an amazing tradition of baking...but not doughnuts. They are hard to track down, and disappointing. A few days ago, I spotted this recipe for baked doughnuts. I have been getting up the nerve to try it out, and today was the day.
With my trusty baking helper by my side, I mixed up the dough and had some help rolling out the dough and cutting out the doughnuts (we tried with a glass until it fell down and smashed, then it was on to a plastic cup!).

Isabel loved helping out, and nearly wouldn't let me help at all. By the end, she was cutting out doughnut holes like a pro. The doughnuts taste fantastic and, as the recipe suggests, taste best right out of the oven. Unbeatably delicious! The family decided they would like some with chocolate icing, so I found a recipe for chocolate glaze and did half the batch with chocolate glaze on the top.

They were also delicious, but my favourite was definitely the sugar and cinnamon. If you're going to try the recipe, set off a couple of hours for it. I didn't realise it would take so long, and our afternoon tea ended up being ready only an hour before dinnertime!
By unanimous vote, this recipe is going into the family favourites. Love doughnuts? Give it a try!
Happy Weekend!
