a world of white

Tuesday, 15 January 2013

We awoke on Monday to a world of white. Fresh snow. The sky was heavy and dark, and thick, fat snowflakes were swirling around frantically. My heart sank, even as the children jumped around in excitement. I started to feel panicked as I thought of the long, steep hill I would need to drive up, on freshly fallen snow, to get to preschool. We drove up without incident (only a couple of fish tails!) and Lucy and I continued on with our day, taking the long way to the grocery store - so long, in fact, that Lucy fell asleep in the car and slept through the entire grocery experience. Then, suddenly, the snow stopped and the sun peeked through, lighting everything up in majestic glory. It was just beautiful.

The snow started up again in the early afternoon and, fearing I wouldn't be able to get up the hill later, I left straight away. Ironically, it stopped snowing as soon as we got home, which was highly amusing to my dear husband, who said, "So..you drove in the worst of it?" with a big smile on his face (he reads the weather updates).

More snow last night, a careful drive up the hill again today, and an awesome morning work out from shovelling snow from our path, and I am very happy and thankful to be inside...as the snow falls gently again. Although I left my home in Australia exactly 11 years ago and came to live in snowy Scandinavia, there are still some things that I have trouble getting used to. Snow, or more correctly, driving in the snow, is one of them. At moments like this, however, I remind myself to put my adventure hat on, and keep things in perspective - at least we don't have to clear the footpath as well!

Hugs, Fiona
